What is RAM

RAM is abbreviation for Random Access Memory that functions just like human’s short term memory. CPU or Central Processing Unit enables RAM to be accessed by user. RAM only can be utilized when you on a computer and it not accessible when PC is off. When a user reboots a PC, BIOS (computer boot firmware) will retrieve information from RAM.

Capacity of RAM

Most of nowadays computer, notebook, netbook and nettop have capacity of 256 MB (million bytes) to 4 GB or more of RAM. It is not possible for a computer machine to have a size of RAM of 10 GB or more in the future as technologies evolve. There is limitation for RAM amount for a computer to handle because it is depend on the computer’s hardware specifications. For future upgrade, some computer allows for more RAM to be added into the slot of PC’s motherboard which usually desktop. For laptops, netbooks and nettops however, it is hard to upgrade the RAM size due to limited space. Even though the name is “random”, RAM is highly controlled memory and the storage can be directly ascertained. A decisive method allows certain areas of a computer to access information from RAM.

What is the function of RAM?

Some of applications like games, Microsoft Office software, graphical software, desktop utility and others need information that can be used as quickly as possible so that they can functioning smoothly. RAM allows applications to access the required information in quick manner. RAM only need to be utilized for limited time without burdening the computer user.

Forms of RAM

RAM is made by discrete microchips which means it is separately build. User can add more RAM modules into the RAM slots on the computer’s motherboard. Electrical pathways channel the energy for RAM to functioning.
