Can't...describe...wickedness...
There are tiny restaurants and bars EVERYWHERE. And they're the size of closets or small rooms, you just walk down the streets and there are signs advertising ramen, takoyaki, the omelette things they have here or a million different beers and whiskey. I would love to spend all my pay trying a different thing everyday but I'd be living on the street, so we went grocery shopping :( which was fun though :).
So we got off the plane, got onto a limousine bus and began a 45 minute journey into the city. It was pretty spectacular, Kansai International airport is on an island and we drove over a long bridge heading towards a vista of a huge, sprawling, city set against mountains and an incredible sunrise creeping over them. Every car was in pristine condition and all the buildings of the outer suburbs look like lego. Including Universal studios, of which I got a brief glimpse :).
The bus ride finished at Namba station and we lugged everything up to get a taxi. We had a nice old driver who was more than pleased to have to deal with 2 ignorant foreigners' bad translation of directions. We managed to get to the general area and drove around somewhat uselessly for about 3 minutes until May spotted a park he'd seen on google earth. We jumped out onto what we knew was our street and tried to find the right number. People are incredibly helpful here, all you need to do is look a bit lost and sad and they jump in, snatch your map off you and harness all the broken English they can until their satisfied that you're safely on your way. Which is exactly what an old man sweeping the street did, and so we found our apartment.
The plane ride did not yield particularly good sleeping conditions, so after I contacted my agency we crashed on the futons in our big coats under the multitude of supplied doonas to await the 11.30am arrival of Kaz, the apartment manager.
Kaz is a super-nice 30 something guy with excellent English, who introduced us to the directness of Japanese business dealings. After showing us the communal shower (a floor above and a very cold trek each morning) and promising to contact the gas man to connect our hot water and stove, he got us to sign all the papers. Maynard's usual careful concentration was met with several prompts to hurry up and sign the form please. Then hurry up and date it please. He was not being rude at all, it's just a kind of bluntness the Japanese seem to have in some circumstances, which I really like.
I then needed to get ready to go to the agency, the manager Mitsuo had told me over the phone, with the same manner as Kaz above, that he would pick me up outside the apartment at 1pm. I quickly showered and attempted to hide my sleep-depravation with make-up, then realised I hadn't eaten for a very long time. Maynard went up for his shower while I ran round the corner to Super-tamade, a kind of Fresh Provs, except 3 times the size and open 24 hours. But 24hrs is not so unusual here. Everywhere sells every kind of bento, so it wasn't hard to find some food super fast. On my way home I heard a 'Tz0-e?' coming from a white van. Mitsuo told me I would need bathers and a miniskirt, which I ran upstairs and fetched along with my other stuff, and we drove to the agency.
Mitsuo has the manner of a gruff business man, but a good sense of humour...he was also playing Crosby Stills and Nash in the car, which was a good start. On reaching the agency I met a girl who's name is (I think) Sunato...or something similar. She's a cool little receptionist seems to be from the more westernised generation of Japanese. The other people who work at the agency were similarly nice and surprisingly chilled out. Was measured from the size of my head to the distance between my spine and shoulder to the length of my legs, given a mobile phone and my weekly cash allowance and introduced to a little man (who's name I can't remember but I think he's some kind of manager) for some digi photos.
It was, seriously, like the scene in Lost in Translation where Bill Murray poses for the whiskey photo. I was told to pose as for a catalogue. Not so easy. The guy was an absolute perfectionist, in the politest way possible. My legs needed to be bent just so, my weight balanced exactly central, shoulders straight but not tense, and hands always arranged in a kind of half-point action, while always looking 'natural' and 'elegant'. It was pretty funny watching him prance around, but obviously I couldn't quite get it, so he brought out a model from the other room, a girl from Quebec with about 10 years experience in Asian countries and she was pulling moves like a pro. It looked like some subtle, elegant dance with small movements to and fro, encompassing all the joys of commercial heaven. After openly lying and saying I would emulate her, she whispered to me that she knew it was hard, but the Japanese are just really picky and eventually I would just get what they wanted to see, and that it was really only about 6 different poses that they seem to really like. I think I'll get it eventually...especially after the repetitive 45 minute tutorial I received.
All 9 of us were bundled into the van and driven to our first casting, for a department store. There are about 7 girls and 2 boys from all over the world, one particular girl from Liverpool is here studying as well as working, so she gave me the complete lowdown on the best places to shop and go out, she seems to have an amplifier-esque interest in all things 'indie' and op shop, so she is going to be a wicked advisor. The first gig she told me about came with a warning that the front man was likely to urinate or vomit as part of his on-stage theatrics, which I am totally down with.
The casting consisted of Mitsuo introducing us all with Iron Chef style aplomb and each of us getting a few photos. I realised that the poses introduced to me in the agency were stock standard, so I just followed suit. I was called back a couple of times for a closer look so I can't have done too badly. Our next one was similar, except that we arrived an hour early and had to sit in the car. The are really quick and business like, so there's no waiting around, which is awesome.
Mitsuo drove me home and I finally had some time to catch up with May, who said he made it down to the electronics shop 'Biccamera' in search of a camera and a charger. Apparently he made a bit of a mess of it, but he met a guy from Brisbane who tried to help him out.
We walked into Dotombori in search of food, and, slightly apprehensive, we climbed a set of stairs pomising Nabe (hotpot). We were mostly worried about unwittingly being approached by hostesses and charged an exorbitant price for a meal, but we struck gold with this place. It was about mid range, but the food was awesome. It also helped to be presented with and English menu. The sake was ice cold and a hundred times better than at Matsuri, and we ordered a hot pot meal for two. When it came out, we realised we ordered waaaayyyy too much food. Extremely embarrassed, we attempted as best to follow the waitress's instructions. After looking around nervously and feeling like the dumbest couple ever, we concluded that the main mistake we made was trying to cook too much at once, the cocept being slow food. We did pretty well otherwise, and the meal was DELICIOUS.
After a quick supermrket trip we walked home and agreed that we should invest in a better heater. Our little one doesn't ever seem to penetrate the cold to more than a half meter radius. We crashed big time, and now we have awoken, had a westerner's breakfast in order to save money and are watching Japanese kids shows while waiting for the gas man.
I have a casting in Kyoto today, which is apparently a beautiful city. But I think the best parts of each day will be the nights when me and May can get out and have a look at the millions of crazy things.
Sorry for the ridiculously long story, I'll try to kep them a bit briefer from now on. But I thought I'd set it all down for the first day so that y'all can see how mad and wicked it is here, and so the people who said they'd come visit hurry up and get their arses here. :)
Love you all, not mssing anyone yet though, sorry :) xoxoxoxoxoxoxox! zo

The last, hot, sweaty hours
Maynard has managed to fit in a last minute wash at 9.30pm the day before we leave. At least it's not a last minute pack. Pretty fair effort considering his reputation, which he continually disputes. His effort at protecting his guitar from luggage rough-housing is epic. It took an hour and about 6 square meters of bubble wrap. I finished a whole level of My Sims on NDS before he had decided on the number of inner layers. If only my travel insurance wrapped me in bubble wrap, if the plane crashed I would have a cushioned landing with a really satisfying sound. waffle waffle waffle...mmm cake.
On a high note, May has just informed me that certain government publications advise that your travel insure should cover the cost of sending your body back should one die overseas. He's now in a man vs mosquito dilemma, apparently his opponent is 'really...aggressive'. It's pretty funny.
We will be leaving tomorrow at 5:30pm, arriving 7am on Wednesday. I'll be hitting the ground running work-wise so I probably won't be bothering anyone for a few days but after that I'll want to tell you all about it. No time differences between here and there so excuses for ignoring me on the basis of sleeping patterns will not be accepted.
and hence, oyasumi nasai :)

Staying In A Five Stars Hotel
I was not poor, but my parents were never people to throw around their money. Staying in five star hotels was something that had never really occurred to me when I was growing up. What would you necessitate with a five star extravagance hotel? We were always taught to do our ain entertainment, after all. On vacations, we would travel on hikes, research the local surroundings, and take in movies - all pretty basic activities. We never really needed extravagances like room service, although as children we loved to travel swimming in pools.
So I was pleasantly amused when the conference I was going to decided to set us all up in 5 star hotels. As one of the world's first experts in physical anthropology, I have got always been treated well, but a five star hotel defied my expectations. With the famine of support in academe nowadays, I wondered if they weren't being a small spot too extravagant. I was almost tempted to kick about the five star hotel, but when I talked to one of my colleagues, she rolled her eyes at me. She told me to loosen up and bask for once - to halt always being so serious. I took her suggestions to heart. I wanted to cognize what made five star hotels so special.
Let me state that I was fairly impressed. I had never even stated a four star hotel before, and to me extravagance adjustments simply meant a clean room with a soft bed. five star hotels took everything to a new degree entirely. There was a hearth in every room, a fully catered epicurean meal, marble floorings in the lobby, and diversion installations beyond anything I had seen anywhere but in the most high-priced gyms. There were even professional massages available for hire. I can't state that I needed, or even used every service the five star hotel had to offer, but I was certainly less critical of it by the clip I left. Of course of study of study it was a waste material of resources, and of course it was extravagant, but that was the whole point.
Looking back on the experience, I am glad that I had it. If I never remain in five star hotels again, that is quite good with me - it isn't something that is of import to my manner of life. Still, five star hotels are something that should be experienced by everyone at least once in life - if for no other ground than to cognize what travels on in them.
